DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that role-playing games can influence behavior? And not in a bad way too! Most of the time, at least. LOL. According to a study by researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the roles players take in RPGs can somehow affect how they interact with people in real life. It was a study where the behavior of the participants towards others were observed after having them play either a villain or a hero character in a game. “Our results indicate that just five minutes of role-playing in virtual environments as either a hero or villain can easily cause people to reward or punish anonymous strangers,” said lead researcher Gunwoo Yoon. Another study, conducted at the North Carolina State University, tried to see if there is a correlation between player choices and their assigned roles in a video game created for the study. It showed that players tend to live up to the role than play their own way “The results strongly support the idea that players make choices based on their character’s role, even if they didn’t pick the role,” says David Roberts, lead researcher on the study.

Experts believe these kinds of studies can be helpful in determining whether such games can be used in grooming children in a fun and creative way. This notion is supported by a paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, which stated in its abstract that “role-players report experiencing higher levels of emphatic involvement with others”. In a world where access to RPGs is easy, this can be used as a great tool. With a quick search on the web, you can see all kinds of games for different platforms, and many of them can be played by children. There are thousands of RPGs for Android, iOS, and even game consoles, so if more studies like this can be performed, it will be of great help in developing social skills for kids.

"A fun little game, but not what you'd call spectacular. It is noticeable for its sarcastic humor and that makes it endearing, definitely. But the frequent spelling errors somehow add a clunky, sloppy feel to it, which should have been easy to avoid. And although it is enjoyable, I must admit I ended up feeling I had wasted my time after playing 20 minutes of it. Which doesn't happen to me that often. So..."

"RPGs on Android phones are becoming more common than ever thanks to advances in technology. If you're looking for a great android RPG that will give you hours of game time, plenty of characters, and over 250 different monsters to fight, this is a great option for you. The graphics are very good, especially for Android games, and the turn based system is perfect for advancing a few battles when you have some downtime--or spending a few hours grinding if that's how you play. I enjoyed the storyline and the battle system the most since they reminded me of old-school RPG games for consoles, and since there's a new possible ending even fans who have played it before will want to check it out!
