The concept of time travel is nothing new in the world of science fiction. In the case of the anime Steins;Gate though, it somehow gets applied in such a weird way that you can't help but think if it's actually possible. If the idea of a mad scientist using a microwave to send a banana back in time isn't weird, we don't know what is. Get past that though, and you'll realize the show is trying to tell a much deeper story. At its core, it's truly about a group of flawed by likable characters and how they are affected by the often-difficult decisions they make in their lives. It's funny, intense, and an occasionally dark anime show and it's everything you'd hope this kind of show would be.
Set in the post apocalyptic 2019 Neo-Tokyo, this film is the story of Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang whose childhood friend - Tetsuo- obtains some strange powers after an accident. He will end up losing his mind due to his uncontrollable power, and they will discover the secrets behind Akira, a kid who lived many years ago and had tremendous power.
One of the best sci-fi anime films you can watch is Patlabor 2: The Movie. It was initially released in 1993, but it is a good Japanese action-thriller movie since it is the sequel to Patlabor: The Movie. Its theme is quite related to the international issues faced by the Japanese government in the 20th century.
