These characters are too often found in science fiction. In fact, it’s almost as if a big chunk of this genre lies heavily on the shoulders of these creatures. They’re called robots. Often, they have become sources of humor or unexpected wisdom especially in cinematic classics like Star Wars or Big Hero 6 or in most cases, in sci-fi TV shows on Netflix. But do we actually know who coined the term “robot”? Its etymology is something that definitely sparks interest. Is it an anagram? Is it an acronym? Does it actually stand for something? Well, did you know that in 1921, Karl Capek, a playwright at the time in Czech used the word “slave” in their language to derive the term?

The play was called Rossum’s Universal Robots or R.U.R. It was a tale about robot men who were mechanized to become laborers of human capitalists. Soon enough, the laborers revolted and tried to overthrow their masters. The play had its groundbreaking debut in Prague and eventually found its way in the Big Apple. It stirred a storm in the genre, not only for Capek’s vision but also for the pivotal ripple it left in the industry. Although this may not be the first time for the sci-fi show industry to be introduced with antagonized robots, it certainly is an important milestone in terms of language. But don’t worry, not all robots were made to revolt, some were made to become docile cleaners of your home and some are meant to be crafted by you on different robot building games.
