Did you know The Handmaid's Tale has helped boost Hulu subscriptions? The video-on-demand service might not have Netflix's numbers, but it is enjoying an increase in subscribers. Its subscription growth marked a 40% rise from 2016. Moreover, its total audience has grown to 54 million unique viewers. And that's not all, The Handmaid's Tale is also the first streaming show to win a Best Drama Emmy award. The service is known for its television reruns, but The Handmaid's Tale is its first original hit series based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel. The Hulu exclusive drama is one of the top shows on Hulu. The series is set in a dystopian future where women are forced into reproductive slavery to bear the child of the elite. Sure, the show's subject matter isn't easy to digest. But, it is a must-see for more than an entertainment fix. Hulu has released its second season in 2018 and renewed it for a third following its success. More importantly, The Handmaid's Tale led to a massive boom in business for Hulu.
Hulu has now offered original Hulu TV shows programming since the release of The Handmaid's Tale. This includes its best shows on Hulu from Stephen King's story adapted Castle Rock, Marvel's Runaways, and Future Man. Hulu has grown its TV library to 1,700 titles with more than 75,000 episodes. Yet, it still has a long way from reaching the kind of subscription base that Netflix enjoys globally. This is because until now Hulu is only available within the US and certain US military bases.
