DID YOU KNOW?
The number of e-book readers between the ages of 18 to 29 in 2014 was 47%, and this has only continued to grow ever since. This results in a shift of publishing medium from traditional paperbacks to e-books, especially when you consider that it costs less overall. That said, a number is useless to aspiring authors if WHAT they write about doesn’t appeal to that number. So what appeals to the digital audience? For starters, more readers indulge in fiction than nonfiction, so that’s out of the way. Within fiction itself, the most popular genre is unsurprisingly Romance. A lot of e-book readers are young adults between the ages of 12 and 18 (and sometimes older adults who consider this genre a guilty pleasure). Despite many of us being sick of it by now, we cannot deny how popular Twilight was (and still kind of is) amongst tweens. Not into romance? Not too far from that is the Fantasy genre. Here you have things like Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and more. Sliding in after Fantasy is the Sci-fi genre, more specifically dystopian Sci-fi, featuring books like the Hunger Games, the Divergent series, and more recently, the Handmaid’s Tale.
Now what you see above are just examples of popular writing. Quality is another matter entirely, and the audience knows when you’re just pandering. So yes, these may be the most popular genres but what is it that YOU want to publish? Not sure? Well, you can look at the best sellers on this list of best sites to download books. You just might find the WRITE genre to take a PAGE from!
