WHAT’S THE MEANING?
An IR blaster, or an infrared blaster, is a device that turns a mobile phone into a remote control. With an IR blaster, a mobile phone can emulate an infrared remote control by “blasting” infrared signals to the device. As with most remote controls for home use, a mobile phone with an IR blaster is equipped with an infrared diode at the pointing end. Every button on the virtual remote control has a pattern of light pulses unique to it. When a button is pressed, the IR blaster sends the specific signal, which the receiver on the device recognizes and responds to.
DID YOU KNOW?
Infrared is an electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than that of visible light. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1800. Herschel, a British astronomer, was investigating the different temperatures of colors. He discovered infrared by placing a thermometer next to the red light. This led him to the conclusion that there exists an invisible type of light. He named it infrared, with ‘infra’ being the Latin word for ‘below.’ Infrared is everywhere, because most warm objects that aren’t hot enough to emit visible light emit infrared. Half of the energy the earth receives from the sun is in the form of infrared radiation. Infrared is widely used in thermal imaging, short-range wireless communication, and in astronomy.
