DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that sports broadcasting started by using a telegraph wire? Sports broadcasting started in 1911 in Lawrence, Kansas. It happened in a football game with around 1,000 people in attendance. These people came together to watch a reproduction of the Kansas vs. Missouri football game while the game was being played live in Missouri. This happened when Western Union set up a telegraph wire in Columbia, Missouri. This was the actual location of the game. Several people in Missouri would announce what happened in the game. In turn, the information was mapped out using a model of a football field and was telegraphed back to those waiting in Kansas. This was the first step in modern day sportscasting.
In 1921, the first voice sports broadcast took place in April. The Westinghouse station KDKA in Pittsburgh broadcasted a live radio announcement of a 10-round boxing match. The first college football live radio broadcast took place in October of that year as well. It happened on a match between the University of Pittsburgh against West Virginia University game. These first games started the trend of radio sports broadcasting as we know today. These kinds of broadcasts have been a part of sports tradition all around the world. This serves as the blueprint for technological advancements for sportscasting. Today, there are various sports news sources that are available to be up to date in almost all sporting events. People need not wait for hours because there are sports news apps that can be easily downloaded to stay informed for scores and sports results
