"No movie better encapsulates the principles of Studio Ghibli better than Spirited Away. It is the best studio film that has ever produced. It touches upon so many themes of Japan's history and is filled with so much emotion from its creators. From post-war capitalism to cultural preservation, there so much symbolism in this movie beyond its supernatural nature that it takes more than one viewing to fully grasp and appreciate."

"This is one of the movies that helped catapult Studio Ghibli to international recognition and fame. Its English dub voice cast did an amazing job with the movie. The fully-drawn art style was truly a beauty to behold coupled with a more mature and gritty story that appealed more to Western audiences."

"this is a tough pick considering all of the powerhouse films that have been cranked out of Studio Ghibli. But my opinion My neighbor totoro blows the rest of them right outta the water. what sets this apart is the story. the stunning animation is there but the story line of this movie really takes it to the nest level"

DID YOU KNOW?

The name Studio Ghibli was based on the Arabic name for "hot sahara wind"? Its founders wanted Studio Ghibli to blow a new wind through the anime industry. Ghibli was also the name of an Italian warplane. It also represented Hayao Miyazaki's love for planes and for Italy. The first original movie directed by Miyazaki was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in 1984. People argued that it's not a real Ghibli production. The movie released a year earlier than the official formation of Studio Ghibli. The honor of being one of the first studio ghibli films went to Laputa: Castle in the Sky. The anime industry was not as mainstream and prevalent before like it is today.

The studio had their first big break in 1989 with the release of Kiki's Delivery Service. Their 1997 movie, Princess Mononoke helped the studio gain international presence and recognition. Miyazaki and company went on to make some of the best Studio Ghibli films ever produced. From the supernatural hit, Spirited Away to the period piece, From Up On Poppy Hill. The recent The Wind Rises movie drew inspiration from Miyazaki's love for planes. The studio has become prevalent, often compared to Disney. This is due to the level of quality for both their art style and story-telling. Studio Ghibli has changed the anime industry forever and how people see it in general. They have become an inspiration for other anime shows and anime movies. All trying to live up to the same high-quality standard and artistic excellence.

"I was blown away by this movie. It started off with a bang (literally) and doesn't sugar coat the horrors of war. Even though this is an animated film I wouldn't let kids watch it without giving it a look myself first... the topics are very adult in nature, and may not be suitable for young eyes. If your kids are mature enough, though, this is definitely worth watching along with them and having some frank discussions afterward."

"It is well known that Hayao Miyazaki loved planes and the country, Italy. This movie perfectly melds his artistic style and passion to create something a unique film. It was a light-hearted film with some subtle underlying themes. There's a bit of romance, comedy, chivalry, and plenty of aerial dog fights to go around."

"I am a super fan of Studio Ghibli. But, I have to say..this one felt A LITTLE under the exceptional movies they've created. I don't think this is up to the standard that let's say..spirited away was. But, it was still a great watch, and excellent if taken by itself. Certainly was worth the watch."

So it is extremely hard to say which one is the best as it is extremely subjective and would differs from person to person. But with that said, Only Yesterday is a fine example of a Studio Ghibli film and is one among many fine examples of their work."

"This movie is an important part of the studio's history as it helped them gain a broader appeal and recognition here in the West, and for good reason. The studio makes some of the best animated films in the world with a level of quality rivaling that of Disney. This movie is no different and is a beautiful coming of age story with a lot of heart and lighter in tone compared to others from the studio. This is one of the best Studio Ghibli films that the whole family can watch."
