DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Nintendo started out as a popular card game company? Before its domination of the gaming industry with the best Super Mario Bros games, the company manufactured cards. When Japan cut off its relations with the West in 1633, there was a ban put on all foreign playing cards. The government did this to avoid the proliferation of gambling in society. The enactment of the Meiji Constitution led to government changes that relaxed the ban on playing cards. Nintendo was the most popular card company so they were able to expand faster than any of their competition. Nintendo had been a stable company and was already established 70 years before the first video game was invented. With the emergence of the first U.S.-made home video game console in 1972 (Magnavox Oddysey), the company saw a bigger market. Nintendo found the next steps in electronic games as in 1975, they acquired the Odyssey's distribution rights for Japan.
Almost 50 years after, the gaming brand has is still consistently recognized as one of the best in the world. They had produced modern gaming consoles like the Nintendo DS. (the world's first home gaming system with a touch sensitive screen). Also, their latest cash cow, the Nintendo Switch, has been so successful. It seems like Nintendo will continue to dominate the gaming industry for the foreseeable future. With a 117-year lineage, Nintendo has seen the entirety of video game history. It is also the only console manufacturer to consistently release a system for every generation of gaming consoles.
