DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the first-ever one million-hit video on YouTube was a Nike ad that featured Brazilian football player Ronaldinho receiving his pair of “Golden Boots”? On April 23, 2005, YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim posted the very first video on YouTube titled “Me at the Zoo”, lasting for only 19 seconds, with Karim standing in front of the elephants and talking about their trunks. On May during the same year, YouTube launched its beta site and was officially released to the public 7 months later following a $3.5 million investment from Sequoia Capital which enabled them to increase bandwidth and improve its servers.
What started out as a repository of amateur videos became a powerhouse of original content after it was bought by Google only a year later. Whilst the old videos are still available for viewing on its site, YouTube now features plenty of content creators who upload original videos covering a wide variety of subjects. Plenty of videos about documentaries, gameplays, political analyses, brand and product reviews, and vlogs, among others, can be found on YouTube. Nowadays, the video sharing site garners roughly 15 billion page views monthly and cashes in at least $183 billion from ad revenues alone.
