DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T), one of the largest telecommunications company in the world, traces its origin to another company created by the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell? AT&T was formerly called Southwestern Bell Corporation (SBC) and is one of the subsidiaries of the Bell Telephone Company (BTC), the first company created by the Scottish-born American entrepreneur and innovator Bell. Bell built BTC in 1882 and renamed the company into AT&T Corporation in 1885.
The telephone company expanded and saw the creation of numerous subsidiaries throughout its first century, and the US government decided to break up telephone giant that it forced the corporation to divest in 1982, resulting into the independence of the smaller companies including SBC. In 2005, SBC grew big enough to buy its parent company, AT&T, then later rebranded and adopted the name. By 2016, 10 of the former 22 companies under the monopoly of BTC were reunited under AT&T, which is now second among the biggest service providers in the US, controlling 33.6% of wireless subscriptions, around %2 less than the leaders, Verizon. AT&T might have relinquished some of the market shares it had, it is still the world's largest telecommunications company in the world with a value of $245.58 billion.
