Since the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee, the internet has exponentially increased not only in terms of size and user population, it has also increased in importance. It has shaped the 21st century in all aspects. People’s lifestyles are irrevocably changed by how much the internet has changed the modern world. In less than three decades, the World Wide Web grew from having one website, info.cern.ch, to having over 1.8 billion websites, with 4.47 billion indexed web pages.
To put it into context, Google has indexed only approximately 0.004% of all internet pages in existence. However, despite these huge numbers, the Real Time Statistics Project states that only 25% of these are active, while the rest are parked domains. In 2016, it was estimated that one billion gigabytes of data is uploaded to the Internet every month. As a result, according to an IBM Marketing Cloud Study, 90% of the data on the internet was created only since 2016. As the Internet grew and developed, so did the means to connect to it. From the dial-up access of the 90s, to cable internet access, to DSL connections, to satellite Internet, Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, and now to fiber optics. People have found ways how to get free internet. They have also found ways to use internet on their phone without Wi-Fi. The fastest internet speeds recorded was in 2014, where fiber lines were used to reach speeds of 32 terabytes per second.
