Did you know that the longest match in the history of tennis lasted for 11 hours and five minutes? Yes, it's so long that the scoreboard even found itself in dire straits. The match was played by American 23rd seed John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. It took place at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. If you watch the full match replay of this one, you'd surely be amazed at the perfervid nature of these two players. But truth be told, nobody really expected them to make history: Isner wasn't particularly considered a juggernaut at the time, while Mahut's name didn't ring several bells then. So, how did they do it?
The avid fans of tennis know that in the first four sets of a match, a tiebreaker is used to decide a tied set. However, this scoring rule didn't apply in the fifth set in 2010, except at the U.S. Open. Hence, when a match reaches the fifth set, the players would compete until one of them wins three sets. In the case of the Isner-Mahut match, the first four sets were played without a hitch and both players gained two sets each, but the fifth set had to be put on hold because of fading light. On the second day of the match, the two played neck and neck. Again, the match had to be suspended for the same reason. Finally, on the third day, Isner gained the upper hand, first with a difficult inside-out forehand from the middle of the court, and then with a down-the-line backhand passing shot. After 67 minutes of play, he was declared the winner. It was not really a Grand Slam win as it was just the first round of the tournament. This does not take away from the incredible feat that these two players have achieved.
