Did you know that Torrentz was the predecessor of Torrentz2? Torrentz was actually the second most popular torrent website back in 2012. It is a metasearch engine for BitTorrent, which was a Finland-based website run by an individual known with alias "Flippy". The site was actually released in 2003 but reached its peak popularity in 2012. It took them roughly at least nine years to reach their peak. Unfortunately, Torrentz finally shut down on August 2016 after 13 years in operation. Its operators have also given a farewell message displayed on its homepage. This is after all the hurdles it faced from dodging DMCA claims, attempts to take over the domain, and domain name suspensions.
Interestingly, Torrentz2 website was launched days after the shutdown of Torrentz. This newly-launched website is an unofficial clone. Its homepage even claims it is a clone, copycat, successor, and replacement of Torrentz. Additionally, their initial launch was met with a modicum of attention. It comes as it has successfully indexed roughly 60 millions torrents. In case you were wondering, Torrentz and its successor isn't considered as a torrent cache. This means uploading anything to the site is impossible. But it links to other independent search engines which host torrent files instead. For instance, websites with movie torrents, video game torrents, and music torrents are indexed within their database.
