Did you know?
Did you know that the author of the Dystopian novel Handmaid's Tale made her cameo for the television series' pilot episode? Canadian poet, novelist, essayist, and literary critic Margaret Atwood graced the show, playing the character of an Aunt. Her character hit Elisabeth Moss's character during her initiation into the fold.
The web television series is the tenth adaptation of the book. A stage version was shown at Tufts University just a few years after the book was published in 1985. It was also adapted into an opera, ballet, radio play and a film in 1990 starring Natasha Richardson and Faye Dunaway. The series can be considered as the most successful adaptation out of them all. It has received widespread critical acclaim on its first season. It has an approval rating of 94% on review website Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.72/10. The first season also won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from thirteen nominations. Its lead actress Elisabeth Moss bagged the Golden Globe for Best Actress. The second season received almost the same positive reviews, as it makes room for broader social commentary through more intimate lenses, according to a review on Rotten Tomatoes.
