Did you know that Hannah Baker was supposed to be played by Selena Gomez? When the novel 13 Reasons Why became a hit back in 2007, production companies compete for a chance to secure the rights to turn the story into a movie. Included in those was Gomez' July Moon Productions, which went on to succeed. Subsequently, the Wizards of Waverly Place star was cast to play Hannah Baker in the novel's big-screen adaptation. Having said that, the production of the film was held off. When Netflix explored into adapting the Asher's book into a series, Gomez was already a worldwide sensation. The creators, along with Asher and the actress herself, decided that Gomez was already too big to be Hannah Baker. They all thought that the audience of the series should be able to identify with Baker, which would be difficult with a superstar in the role. Thus, the casting of Katherine Langford.
Selena Gomez went on to be the executive producer of the show. Meanwhile, did you know that the creators of the show also altered the original ending of the story? In the novel, Hannah committed suicide by drug overdose. That ending never made it to the Netflix version of Asher's story. Instead, what was shown on one of the best 13 Reasons Why scenes were Hannah committing suicide by slitting her wrists, which was really intended. In one of the episodes of 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons, writer Brian Yorkey said: "We worked very hard not to be gratuitous, but we did want it to be painful to watch because we wanted to be very clear that there is nothing, in any way, worthwhile about suicide."
