Animal Kingdom is a series that was created after it's 2010 Aussie movie of the same title. The creators of the film have read true crime books to makes his characters authentic. The film was inspired from the Pettingill clan, a real crime family from Melbourne. Jason Ryan, the counterpart of Finn Cole's role as Joshua "J" Cody, revealed all the tales he witnessed in the family. The real family reigned over Melbourne in the 1980s during the time that pursuing a career in crime was feasible. Compared to his film counterpart, Ryan grew up to be an attack dog under the influence of his uncles. He initially thrived and prospered on violence until he became a police witness. His uncles are well known criminals in Melbourne. Dennis and Peter Allen were known drug dealers and armed robber respectively. His grandmother, Kath Pettingill, was a well known criminal matriarch and brothel owner at the time. He stated that his uncles and some of their collegues murdered two police constables in October 1998. It became known as the Walsh St. murder. Even if Ryan gave evidence for the crimes of his uncles and family friends, they were all acquitted for the crime. The theory goes: his uncles and friends killed the two policemen as payback for shooting one of their friends dead during an arrest. Although this theory is unproven.
This story goes to show that there are a lot of crime movies that have been inspired by real life events. These films are to be taken with a pinch of salt, with the reality that it could entail about the human nature.
