DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that prior to Incredibles 2 audiences will be treated to the Pixar short film “Bao”? “Bao” is a computer-animated short film written and directed by Domee Shi who also made history as the first woman to ever direct a Pixar short and produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21, 2018, and subsequently accompanied Incredibles 2 in theaters.

This 8-minute film is about an aging and lonely Chinese-Canadian mother, suffering from empty nest syndrome, a feeling of grief and loneliness parents may feel when their children leave home for the first time, such as to live on their own or to attend a college or university who then receives an unexpected second chance at motherhood when she makes a dumpling that comes to life as a boy. Many find the story touching, some said that every element of the film pulled on emotions right away, the music was also incredibly conducive to the message and that the story is completely relatable. However, despite the high praises it is receiving, the film also has its fair share of negative criticisms, some say that the story was creepy and very unsettling, having a dumpling as a child and eating it at the end. Most critics say that cultural difference is the main reason of these polarizing opinions, but even without all the cultural nuances and intricacies, “Bao” is about growing up. While the experiences depicted may be specific to Chinese culture, the themes are universal if viewers know how to step outside their own perspective.
