DID YOU KNOW?
Hansel and Gretel is not your typical fairytale. It's far from whimsical, and most of the story's elements are quite disturbing. First of all, the premise of the story is that the siblings get abandoned by their parents. Although the version for kids tells that Hansel and Gretel happened to get lost in the woods. Whatever version you've read as a kid, the original version is definitely not for children. The original story comes from Brothers Grimm who are known for their collection of fairytales and folklore. Hansel and Gretel is a story that has been retold by the authors themselves. The versions created for Hansel and Gretel are five and the final version was released in 1857. In the first draft back in 1810, Little Brother and Little Sister was the title of the story. Two years later, Brothers Grimm release the first edition where the Hansel and Gretel already have names. It also revealed that the father was reluctant to abandon his children as per the suggestion of the mother. Later on, they changed that aspect and also made their mother a stepmother instead. In the final and fifth edition in 1857, details about the famine were included. This part was added to justify the father abandoning his children Hansel and Gretel. Due to being abandoned by their parents, the siblings encounter a candy house and get lured by a witch.
In the 2020 movie, Gretel & Hansel, these dark elements are also present. Although there is not much information on the parents in the horror movie, the witch will be present. Also, Gretel remains to be the clever one among the siblings and helps get them out of trouble. The harrowing fairytale that was always meant for adults will get an adaptation with a new take.
