The new Watchmen series officially debuted on October 20, 2019. If you liked the movie or felt like it did not go deep enough with its story, this is your chance to experience and see the story unfold again and hopefully, this time, it will be much more in-depth.
Before the TV series, there was already a Watchmen movie? It came out in 2009 and directed by Zack Snyder but had a poor reception from viewers. Even before that movie, there were plenty of other directors lined up for the adaptation. In fact, Alan Moore, one of the comic was against the whole idea of an adaptation. He made very strong remarks in an interview with The Los Angeles Times back in 2008. The film "spoon-feeds us, which has the effect of watering down our collective cultural imagination". Despite all the odds, Damon Lindelof, of "Lost" and "The Leftovers" fame. took a chance of adapting it into a TV series. Lindelof stated that HBO's Watchmen will feature a new story and characters. He did point out that the events of the show will be a guiding principle.
This upcoming series is only one of the many superhero comic adaptations made for TV. If recent TV shows are anything to go by, comic book TV adaptations are quite popular with viewers today. Amazon's The Boys series was a sleeper hit became its most-viewed original tv series ever. Even Disney Plus, coming later this year, will have a superhero-packed line-up. Despite past events, the acclaimed comic book deserves another shot. There are so many interesting characters such as Rorschach to explore. Of course, there's Doctor Manhattan himself who deserves a proper origin story. Fingers crossed that the TV show will finally do the comic book justice.
