DID YOU KNOW?
Public Broadcasting System (PBS) was the first company to broadcast reality TV? The show was “An American Family,” and it aired on PBS from January to March 1973. It offered an intimate and sensationalized examination of a single-family. As well as a powerful critique of American society as a whole. PBS had the flexibility to broadcast an experimental program that challenged audiences. This was without pressures from advertisers that preferred to sponsor comfortable, traditional content. Producer Craig Gilbert sought to use this to force audiences to pause and think. To force them to grapple with issues at the heart of the American condition. He knew that an accurate portrayal of an American family would shock audiences.
Today, with plenty of great shows and movies available, viewers are engaging more into TV series downloads, some even resort to movie torrents yet no other reality shows had the same impact as that of An American Family had. It did play a role in inspiring modern reality shows as we know them today but in the other direction. Today, people view these shows as something that does not depict the lives and situations as they are. For some, it gives us an unrealistic and exaggerated look at the glamorous lives of people. Yet, shows like Survivor, The Bachelor, and of course, the reality show Love Island, are having their moments in the limelight at the moment.
PS: There a lot of websites to watch Love Island online for free!
