Money Heist (La casa de papel) is a Spanish TV heist crime drama series created by Alex Pina. The series was initially intended to be a limited series that is to be told two parts. It had its original run of 15 episodes in Spain. When Netflix acquired rights to stream it worldwide though, it re-cut the series into 22 shorter episodes. The first part debuted in December of 2017, followed by the second part in April 2018. The series was renewed for 16 episodes together with an increased budget. It was also divided into two parts with the first half releasing in July 2019 and the second in April 2020. The first two parts of the series revolved around an elaborately planned, multi-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. It involved eight robbers as they take hostages as part of their plan to help them print and escape with 2.4 billion euros.
The latter two parts of the series tell the story of the surviving robbers of the Royal Mint heist as they come out of hiding. With the help of some new members, they plan and performed an assault on the Bank of Spain. The series received critical acclaim and was praised for its sophisticated plot and drama. It was also praised for its direction and its attempt to innovate on Spanish TV programming. It was the most-watched non-English series and series overall on Netflix in 2018. Did you know that one of the biggest heists in history occurred in Baghdad? It was spearheaded by none other than the infamous Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein. The robbery took place at The Central Bank of Iraq a day before the Iraq War ignited in 2003. Hussein deployed three trucks to the Central Bank which will carry cash. He also sent his son Qusay with a note instructing to withdraw almost a billion dollars from the bank. The heist was a success, as Hussein had over $920 million dollars hidden in his palaces, only to be recovered in the raids afterward. However, it didn't end there. Some of the American troops that conducted the raid were caught red-handed keeping hundreds of thousands of dollars for themselves. Thirty-five army members were caught, probably blinded by the amount of money in front of their eyes.
Indeed, it is one of the heists which pretty much became a success. Álex Pina, on the other hand, had his own version of a heist - but for television purposes. He was the creator of one of the best TV shows to watch in Spanish today, La Casa De Papel (or Money Heist in English). The show's pilot season premiered in Spanish TV station Antenna 3. More viewers found a way to watch Money Heist online when Netflix acquired its global streaming rights back in 2017. But even before reaching a broader audience, it already earned nods from critics, winning the best drama series award in the 46th International Emmy Awards in 2018. Money Heist was then renewed by the streaming service for a third season, with the first part premiering on July 19, 2019. Truly, it has been one of the greatest additions in the already great Netflix originals lineup, and fans now look forward to the series' next part. What twist do you expect from the show?
