Parasyte was a science fiction horror manga series that was written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki. It ran from 1989 to 1995, spanning 10 volumes in total. The series won the Kodansha Manga Award for general manga in 1993. Then, it won the Seiun Award for best manga of the year in 1996. Despite its popularity and success, it took the series almost 20 years to get an anime adaptation made for it. The anime was called, Parasyte: The Maxim and aired from October 2014 to March 2015 with a total of 24 episodes. A two-part live-action film was also released around the same the anime series itself was airing.
The story centers around a 17-year-old high school student named Shinichi Izumi. One night, worm-like creatures with drills as heads called "parasytes" appear on Earth. They take over the brains of human hosts through their ears and noses. One parasyte attempts to do just that but fails and ends up taking over his right hand instead. The Japanese word for right is "migi" so that is what its name ended up being. In the English version of the anime, the detail gets flipped and the parasyte enters Shinichi's left hand. It ended up being called "lefty" instead. As a result, they both end up retaining their intellect and personality. Shinichi now battles other parasytes that feed on humans with the help of migi. All the while, he slowly forms an unlikely bond with this sentient creature.
