DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the Portrait of a Lady on Fire creator Céline Sciamma and the actress Adèle Haenel once dated each other? Uh, awkward? Well, not really, and the Cannes award-winning romantic period film is proof of that. We mean, just watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and you'll see that their past relationship never got in the way of their work and that even has the chance to be on par with greatest French films ever made. Okay, you're probably intrigued by how their story all began. Trust us, we were just like you too!
The two met in 2006 on the set of Water Lilies (which, by the way, is a really great coming-of-age film for girls who are just beginning to understand their sexuality and is a perfect addition to this list of the best French romantic films), but it wasn't until 2014 that they publicly acknowledged their relationship. At the time of their meeting, Sciamma was a 28-year old screenwriter for Water Lilies. It was her first foray into directing. Haenel, on the other hand, was just at the tender age of 17 when she played a 15-year old girl in the film. And if you ask us, it totally makes sense that the two got together sometime in 2014, when the two, mostly Haenel, were in the right age to have a clearer understanding of love. How did we know about this, you might ask. Alright, ICYMI, it was during Haenel's acceptance speech for her César award that she put her relationship with Sciamma out in the open. Sadly, as of 2017, the has reportedly broken up. And Haenel, as of 2018, was in a relationship with musician and singer Julia Lanoë from the band Sexy Sushi.
