Did you know that Robin Hood's true identity has never been proven? And that it is still questioned whether the legendary thief/hero really existed beyond the numerous medieval ballads that propelled his adventures into a timeless epic? Up to today, there are no accepted historical records about a single man who led a band of thieves and outlaws against a merciless and abusive sheriff (the old name for tax collectors), though there are several real people whose stories are identical with the myth of Robin Hood, but many of them happened in different eras and in different places in England, making it seem impossible to make the puzzle pieces fit together. This uncertainty has led to the numerous adaptation of the longbow-wielding woodsman, and the story has inspired hundreds of books and at least 68 small and big screen movies, including Russell Crowe's 2010 box office hit Robin Hood, and Cary Elwes' widely criticized Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
Robin Hood's classic tale of "stealing from the greedy to give it to the needy" has inspired not only moviemakers but also people in real life. Years ago in Manhattan, New York, a still unidentified group stole construction materials from luxury developments and donated them to places destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, while in Hamburg, Germany, a group of 30 activists dressed in superhero costumes broke into expensive restaurants and stole food to give them to underpaid interns.
