Did you know that before the actual shooting of the scenes in the movie Roma, none of the actors actually saw the script? In fact, Yalitza Aparicio was caught off guard when she found out that she was going to give birth to a stillborn baby. To her surprise, she was really sobbing that the director, Alfonso Cuarón, had to embrace her and asked the camera to stop rolling. According to an exclusive interview with Cuaron, he just wanted to capture the rawness of her reaction as a mother to the stillborn baby. And since the film is an autobiography of Alfonso Cuaron himself, every aspect of the film had a personal touch--from casting to the actual shooting. Did you know that the casting of Cleo, played by Yalitza, took them almost a year? To be fair, he didn't really mind if the role was played by a professional actor not. He just wanted someone who looks and feels like Libo, their family's maid and to whom the movie was dedicated.
Much as he was inspired by renowned directors such as Víctor Erice and Steven Spielberg, Cuaron really wanted to make a film out of his own vision and direction. By that, he meant veering away from any influence from the directors he look up to. Although the movie was shown in only a few theatres, well you can still watch Roma online, the critically acclaimed movie garnered several awards and nominations. It even got three nods from the Golden Globes! Indeed, Roma is a masterpiece that everyone should see!
