SpongeBob SquarePants is an American comedy TV series that premiered on Nickelodeon on July 17, 1999. It was created by marine science educator and animator, Stephen Hillenburg. Nickelodeon actually held a preview for the show first in the United States. This was on May 1, 1999, right after it aired the Kids' Choice Awards that year. Fun fact, much of the ideas that Hillenburg used on the show actually came from an unpublished educational comic book. It was titled The Intertidal Zone and he created it a few years back in 1989. Tom Kenny, who voices SpongeBob in the show worked with him in developing the show. The main character was initially supposed to be called SpongeBoy and the show, SpongeBoy Ahoy!. This was changed as the name was already trademarked. Thank Poseidon' Trident!
The series primarily takes place in the benthic underwater city of Bikini Bottom located in the Pacific Ocean. It's beneath an actual coral reef known as Bikini Atoll.
