There have been many iterations of Supergirl throughout history. There's Queen Lucy, Claire Kent, and even Lois Lane herself to name a few. The one that popularized the character and the one that most people would be familiar with is Kara Zor-El. Just who exactly is Kara Zor-El anyway? Kara Zor-El was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino. She first appeared in Action Comics #252 entitled The Supergirl from Krypton back in 1959. Kara is the biological cousin of Kal-El aka Superman. Editors believed that Superman's history has become convoluted. They wanted to re-established his story as " The Last Son of Krypton". So certain major changes had to be made.
Enter the 1985 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths. It was an epic story that sadly ended up killing the Supergirl character. Anyway, going back to Supergirl, fortunately, her character was revived and got her own revamp as is usually the case with comic books. DC relaunched the Supergirl comic series in 2016 as part of their DC Rebirth initiative. In fact, she has appeared in various films and TV shows since she first appeared.
