DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the 17 rabbits owned by Queen Anne in the film memorialize the 12 miscarriages that she suffered and the 5 stillborn babies she lost? The Favourite is a historical period drama film starred by an esteemed set of actresses Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz. While it is a historical film, the director, Yorgos Lanthimos, didn't deal much with its context. If you didn't catch it in theatres last 2018, you can stream The Favourite on some of the best movie sites out there. Meanwhile, much as we wouldn't want to spoil you, we are sharing with you everything you need to know about The Favourite!
To be fair, the way Lanthimos depicted Queen Anne (played by Olivia Colman) was in line with how people remembered the late Queen. Perhaps, one of the juiciest parts of her existence is her 'interest in women'. Yes, romantic friendship was common at that time. But Anne's relationship with her favorite ladies was seen by many to overstep the accepted boundaries. In fact, a love triangle between Anne and her favorites, Sarah Churchill and Abigail Masham existed. Interestingly, Queen Anne was believed to be a generous woman--so generous that she presented the Blenheim Palace to Sarah Churchill. Well, not really to her but to her husband John Churchill in recognition of his victory in 1704. Although you can safely surmise that there has been a romantic relationship between these two women, of course, there was really no firm evidence to support the claim. But, one thing is certain, the depiction of these two women is largely true to history!
