Did you know that despite winning her last award in 1999, Madonna still remains as the #2 artist with the most overall VMA wins? From 1986 up to 1999, Madonna has accumulated a total of 20 awards, coming second only to Beyoncé, who won a total of 24 from 2003 up to 2016. Another interesting to note is that R.E.M. is still currently the band with the most overall wins with a total of 12 awards, despite being officially disbanded since 2011. The MTV Video Music Awards are usually held in New York City or Los Angeles, with some ceremonies being held in Miami and Las Vegas.

For the 2019 ceremony, though, the VMAs will be held in Newark for the first time ever. The annual awards are presented to individuals to honor the best in the music video medium. Like the Grammys and the Emmys, winners are presented with a statue, in this case, a statue of an astronaut on the moon, which is considered to be one of the earliest representations of MTV. Despite fans stating their disapproval of the Video Music Awards' downward spiral from focusing on music to romanticizing personal beef and petty drama, the MTV VMAs still remains as one of the most anticipated events every single year.
