WHAT’S THE MEANING?

A window manager is a software that controls the placement and appearance of the windows on an interface. There are two main types of window managers, with the third being a hybrid of the two. In stacking window managers, the windows act as pieces of paper that can be stacked on top of each other. On the other hand, tiling window managers place the windows in such a way that none of them are overlapping, resulting in a “tiled” appearance. The third type, dynamic window managers, switch between the two layouts.

DID YOU KNOW?

Microsoft called their operating system Windows, because “windows” best described the appearance of the new graphical user interface they invented in 1985. The use of icons and other notations was a clear evolution from the text-based computer interfaces of the time. The appearance of windows for Windows 1 was firmly tiled. It wasn’t until Windows 2 was released a couple of years later that open windows could be maximized, minimised, and overlapped with each other. The next big innovation for windows management was in Windows 95, which featured the Start button, Start menu, and the taskbar. The taskbar gave users greater freedom for multitasking. Windows 7, 8, and 10 have built-in window managers that users can employ to cascade, stack, and tile open Windows. Gesture-activated “snapping” is also a useful management tool.
