""Wuthering Heights" is one of the classics and the mere number of its TV and big screen adaptations shows how relevant it's been since the initial publication date. Not only is it good for women but for anyone who appreciates literature and wants to broaden their horizon by exposing themselves to the genuine classics, Wuthering Heights is a must read. "

This one doesn't really say anything new. Its romance follows every predictable plot beat imaginable - boring, standard, paint-by-numbers dramas and lessons. Pass!"

When I think of women's fiction, I tend to think of female-centric romance, or books about topics that specifically only tend to appeal to women. I'm not sure this qualifies. The lead character is a female, but the book seems to be more of a psychological study than anything else. It is highly rated and does sound good, so I might still check it out."

"Kingsolver (The Bean Trees, 1987; Homeland, 1989; Holding the Line, 1989) now offers a complex but overly calculated novel--unsubtle messages set against spectacular southwestern scenery. Codi Noline takes a job teaching high school in her hometown of Grace, Arizona, partly in order to keep an eye on her doctor father, ailing With Alzheimer's disease, but mostly because--unlike her idolized sister Hallie, who's off in Nicaragua improving Sandinista agriculture until her kidnapping and murder by the contras--Codi has no direction to her life. She always felt like an outsider in Grace, a folkways-rich century-old Spanish-American town where almost everyone is related. She was three when her mother died; later, pregnant after a brief high-school affair with handsome Apache Loyd Peregrina, she lost the stillborn baby. As an adult, Codi is reluctant to form attachments. But once back in town, she nervously resumes her relationship with Loyd (who never knew about the pregnancy). Along the way, Codi--who whines that Hallie is the idealist, that she herself stands for nothing--lectures him about cruelty to animals (he gives up cockfighting); risks dismissal by the school board by teaching about environmentalism and birth control (she's named Teacher of the Year); and helps the Stitch and Bitch ladies' sewing-club stop the mining company from poisoning the river and the orchards. Kingsolver has political conviction, a wonderful eye for the surface of things and many charming poetic conceits, but here her characters seem constructed rather than real. A promising miss."

"This was a fun beach read, but I wouldn't say it is among the best. It is a bit different from other body switching stories."

"This is one of those coming of age books for someone who is slightly of age already and divorced and finding their way. The main character though made up, sticks with you as she goes through her days and emotions and adventures if you will. I really thought the book did a good job of keeping its focus and had good development."

This story is more than just her moving on, it is how she learns to move on and what she needs to go through to really move on in her heart. She soon meets a man and this all plays into her story of how she is able to adjust to her new life and finally get her heart back in the right place."

"I’m not sure who decided this was the best women’s fiction book, but it did not do the job for me. I’m not a huge fiction reader, but this wasn’t one that kept me interested for long. I put it down & picked it back up several times before I could finish it. Maybe it’s personal taste. Really, it’s not easy to label a book as being the best unless it is a top selling book, which this one was not. Try it for yourself, prove me wrong!"

"As far as "best" goes, this definitely did not make the cut. I was thoroughly disappointed in the book overall. The mystery was overly simple, and the feminist tones were so overplayed it almost seemed as if it were satire at times. "

"For sheer entertainment and a laugh-out-loud good time, this is the book to read. I think Fannie Flagg is always witty and heartwarming, but this, her first novel, has to be the most humorous book ever."
