The Dark Knight may be a one-man army for the city of Gotham, but he’s not immune to receiving help. In the entirety of the Caped Crusader’s career, he has been helped by the Boy Wonder, Robin. Five of them, in fact! One of the best-known incarnations is Jason Todd, the first Robin who canonically died. Well, sort of. Bruce first encounters Jason Todd when the latter tries to steal the tires off the Batmobile. Bruce then takes him in and trains him for six months, eventually turning Jason into Robin. Unlike Dick, however, Jason was a “rebel” Robin. He was prone to playing by his own rules, lacking the restraint that Batman has tried to instill in him, and on occasion would outright defy Batman. Even then, Batman was still supportive of Todd, even in Jason’s pursuit of his biological mother’s whereabouts. Jason is eventually reunited with her, but is then handed over to the Joker as part of a cover-up for his blackmail. By the Joker’s hand, Jason Todd would then become the first casualty that would hit Batman hard, and is still one of the most controversial comic book deaths to date.
Jason Todd doesn’t stay dead, however. While the methods vary, one thing stays the same: Jason comes back as the iconic anti-hero, Red Hood, a vigilante like Batman but more violent and not above killing criminals. The Red Hood has become a major secondary character in Batman’s story, even appearing in some of the Xbox One Batman games on this list like LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham and Batman: Arkham Knight, the latter of which features him as the antagonist. Talk about a dysfunctional family reunion!
