"I read this book in elementary school and it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I remembered about it again. I bought it to reread again and it brings back so many memories. It's such a wholesome book! I absolutely love it and it reminds me of my childhood when I would go to the Winn-Dixie grocery store. Definitely suggest it for your young children, they'll love it too."

"It's the same with every dog book. Someone is lonely in a sense and they find a friend in a dog or a couple of dogs. They grow attached and dog dies or owner dies. This angle is getting really boring and will never be as good as Where the Red Fern Grows."

"This book has a great story. It really has the feel of you being in the story; it is that well written. Reading it I found myself engaged in the story like I was a part of it. This is a book that I will always remember. It's emotional, hopeful and is just great storytelling overall. A great story that encompasses the differences people have and how they can come together and forge a friendship. "

"I do not think there is anyone at my age would not know the TV series Lassies. He is a great dog. The book is not as much as good as the TV series, but it may will make you nostalgic. If you are just interested in dog books, there are other great books out there but you will love the dog Lassie anyway."

"I'm not positive that James Herriot's book, "Favorite Dog Stories," can be considered a YA book, but it is quite funny and enjoyable no matter your age. If someone is specifically looking for a YA book, I would recommend "A Dog Called Homeless" by Sarah Lean. It's theme is similar to that of "Because of Winn Dixie," and "Shiloh," which are perennial favorites."

"Warning to parents: there's a dodgy paragraph where it's implied the girl might be raped/kidnapped. Honestly I wanted to avoid explaining WHAT she knew he "was going to do to her," - but instead we used it as an opportunity to talk about being wary of strangers and how to stay safe. Still, I'm glad I read the book before we read it together, or I wouldn't have had a plan. Other than that, a fun book!"

"My daughters and I were talking about dogs and this book sprang to mind. I remember reading it in 6th or 7th grade and the impact it made on me. I read this to them even though they are capable of reading it on their own. I just wanted to experience it through theirs eyes with them. I cannot recommend this one enough."

"This was a great story about the lengths a boy went to to save and rescue a dog from its abusive owner. This book was full of action and had some heart pounding moments, which I loved. The main character is 11 as well so it resonates with readers of that age group."
