"Personally, I think there are some situations in The Fault in Our Stars that are will probably not happen in real life. Although I do think it was the way the characters in the book reacted to the events happening in their lives that was realistic and believable."

"Jenny Han's young adult novel is pretty captivating for its intended audience, apparently. She seems to capture the thoughts and motivations of a teenage girl fairly well. It's a good choice for a road trip or vacation or something along those lines. There's nothing profound here, but it'll keep a young female reader engaged for the most part."

"Gayle Forman has a writing style that many appreciate and admire but I am not as convinced. I find the characters struggle with decisions that would not seem to be so difficult in real life. I found it difficult to relate to Adam or Mia but did think that they had a sweet romance. There is a lot of switching back and forth between memories and the present which I found a little annoying. Young adults would probably embrace the angst more than I did."

"This is a bawdy take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty—and, in particular, the aftermath of her rescue and awakening. There are many such adult-targeted books based on children’s fairy tales, but the reader should be particularly aware of the nature of this story because it’s fairly hard-core. Since one may associate the fairy tale with lighthearted stories, many readers won’t be ready for the wide-ranging sexual and sadistic activity that goes on in this book. If you’re a hard-core sado-masochist, you may object that this isn’t so intense in subject matter. That’s probably true for you, but for the run-of-the-mill reader, it’s pretty wild stuff. In essence, Sleeping Beauty enters into a finite period of sexual slavery (technically more sexual indentured servitude) in repayment for her rescue."

It contains a powerful message that should really resonate with young adults, and is relevant today more than ever. It's one of my son's favorite books, and his enthusiasm for the topic led me to pick it up myself; I highly recommend it!"

Even so, moving from Kansas, where everyone is used to her lack of arms, to Arizona where her dad got a new job, creates a new set of fears and anxieties. How she deals with them, helps her parents turn a decrepit theme park around, solve a mystery and make new friends makes for a very satisfying read. In terms of realistic novels, Katherine Paterson has hit it out of the park yet again. Lyddie is this beautiful, intelligent young woman who is orphaned at a young age and works to raise money to reunite with her family and help pay of old debts. After the first page you will be able to put yourself in her shoes. The pace of the novel never gets too slow, and even when it slows, you feel the true character development shining through the boisterous pages of touching text.
