What are the most popular anime genres?

It's pretty crazy to think that there are over 40 anime genres in total. But, only a handful of those genres are popular. There are a lot of types when it comes to anime--action, drama, horror, etc. Not to mention, some of those genres tend to come and go every now and then. Still, the most popular genres are the ones that have become prominent enough to stay for a long time. Of course, we're not gonna go through every anime genre that's ever existed. That would take up too much of our time. That's why in this list, we tried our best to include the most popular ones. So whether you're a die-hard anime fan, a casual watcher, or an interested onlooker, these genres have the best anime that could get you up to speed in the anime world!

  1. 1Shounen

If you're a long time anime fan then you probably already know about shounen anime. If you like watching badass fights between strong characters then you'll definitely love this! 'Shonen' usually refers to young boys under the age of fifteen so it's aimed at that demographic. A lot of shounen have a young male hero and involve elements of action, adventure, and fighting. But, shounen with female protagonists as well as hints of comedy has also become more and more popular. Some examples of popular shounen are Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, and My Hero Academia. Even though there are a lot of types of shounen anime, they all have one thing in common. They all want to reach out to you to tell their story and hope that their story sticks with you.

  1. 2Supernatural

When it comes to anime, you could almost say that everything is supernatural. From ghosts to superpowers to aliens to gods and demons. At the end of the day, the supernatural anime genre is pretty diverse. You could even call it a double-edged sword. It's so vast that so many different shows fit under the umbrella of what supernatural is. But, because it's so diverse, it will always be partnered with another genre or two to create a better story. Supernatural elements in an anime are a must-have 'cause they make any story ten times better. Plus, the genre is so overreaching that you could see facets of it in a lot of anime. Some of the most popular supernatural anime include Blue Exorcist, Noragami, Soul Eater, and Tokyo Ghoul.

  2. 3Slice Of Life

It might seem boring but it's incredible how watching small moments from everyday life in anime could actually be interesting. The Slice of life anime genre is a fan-favorite among the community. It gives fans a realistic representation of everyday experiences. Things like romance, friendships, challenges, and success are among them. We often see characters that remind us of ourselves whenever we go about our daily business. It doesn't really have tightly-knit plots or a lot of action going on. Slice of life mangas and anime usually have other elements like fantasy, drama, historical, and many others. What's great about this genre is it invites us to reflect on the small moments in life. It teaches us to appreciate the little things and not take things for granted. If you want a slice of life then try watching Toradora!, Your Lie in April, and Violet Evergarden!

  1. 4Romance

You don't have to be a scientist to figure out what this genre is all about. Romance is pretty much a world of cliches full of hopes and dreams that come out in a story of love. That's why it's no surprise that romance anime is a popular genre. Hopeless romantics go crazy for these types of shows but that doesn't mean they're the only ones. Almost everybody dreams of having perfect romance in their lives. The romance genre is divided into many subgenres. You've got light-hearted romantic comedies, dramatic romances, and types with hints of other elements like fantasy romance anime. Still, we love the romance genre in anime because it speaks to us who dream of having something similar. Nagi no Asukara, Kimi no Na Wa, and Wotakoi: Love is Hard for an Otaku are just some of the examples of series that will make you fall in love.

  2. 5Magic

Who doesn't love magic, right? Magic as an element has been a part of human life. From superstition, innate ability, and even technology, all these could have forms of magic. The concept of magic has been a huge influence throughout human history. So it's not surprising to see authors incorporate magic in different forms of literature including anime. There are so many types of magic anime that exist in different genres. It's kind of hard to compare each one because they all bring something unique to the table. Everything from shounen, fantasy, and even magical girl anime are genres with hints of magic sprinkled on them. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Fate/Zero, and Seven Deadly Sins are just some of the shows that dabble in magic anime.
