The anime adaptation of One Piece has been well-received since airing its first episode back in 1999. The show has been among the top 10 anime in terms of viewer ratings every week in Japan as of a recent 2017 survey. It has also received various awards and recognition over the years and it's not hard to see why. Its art style has been viewed as simplistic but it has grown into its own with every new season. The show's strength lies in its story and its colorful cast of merry fellows. You'd think that with an episode count nearing a thousand already that is would get dull and boring. That has not been the case though, with the show maintaining its level of appeal and excitement after all these episodes. With so many characters and personalities in the show, you're bound to have someone you like and root for. As with any show of this type, there's also bound to be tragic deaths, either to serve as an end to a story or to move it forward. These arguably make up One Piece's saddest moments. With this in mind, we've made a list of some of the most tear-jerking deaths in One Piece. These characters will be missed but will never be forgotten.
Portgas D. Ace is the illegitimate and biological son of the King of Pirates himself, Gol D. Roger. His very existence is considered a crime and this has affected how he views himself and his personality. It wasn't until he joined the Whitebeard pirates that he was finally able to find a place where he belongs. He was captured by the marines and while he was rescued by Luffy, it ultimately led to his death to save Luffy's life.
The Going Merry was a gift from Kaya to the Strawhat Pirates as their first-ever ship. She has been with the crew for many of their adventures but eventually, there came a time that she could no longer be repaired. She was abandoned as Water 7 but not until setting sail for one last time to save the Strawhats from Enies Lobby. In the end, she was set on fire and the crew paid their respects for all her service.
The World's Strongest Man, Edward Newgate, considers every single member of his crew as his sons and this, of course, included Portgas D. Ace. When Ace was captured, Edward waged war with the Navy in order to rescue his son. Ace was rescued with the help of Luffy but tragically died anyway to protect his little brother. He challenged the Marines to help the children escape but was gunned down by the Blackbeard pirate after. A tragic end for one of the strongest pirates ever and one of the saddest One Piece moments.
Bell-mere is a former Marine and is the adoptive mother of Nojiko and Nami. She lived in Cocoyashi Village with her daughters in peace. This was until Arlong came and demanded money from her for being allowed to live. She could not lie about not being called the mother of the two girls so she told the truth. The money she had was only enough for herself or the girls. She sacrificed herself and was shot in the head but not before saying, "I love you" to them.
Rosinante is a former World Noble and second of Donquixote Homing and brother to Donquixote Doflamingo. The family has lost their status as Celestial Dragons and fell from grace. He became a Marine Commander and worked as a double-agent for the Donquisote pirates to gather more information that would help stop his evil brother. He eventually met Law, who suffers from the Amber Lead Syndrome. He did what he could to protect and save the boy that he betrayed everyone and fed the Ope Ope Mi to Law. This ultimately led to his death at the hands of his brother.
