For most of us, going out to watch a certain film in the theaters may seem like a casual activity. However, this brings much more significance to the movie industry than some of us notice. We live in an era where online streaming and Blu-ray are much revered, to the point of snubbing the actual cinema experience. At the end of the day, box office flops and kingpins are determined not only by how mind-blowing a movie's plot is but more importantly, how much it makes in the theaters. Let's face it, there is little to no point justifying a masterpiece of a film if it doesn't make a decent run on the big screen. This is why studios and filmmakers do agree, most often than not, to try and compromise in order to sustain making quality films in the long run. Throughout the history of cinema, there have been predictable box office takeovers due to a film's overwhelming marketing. However, some titles that have been considered to be among the top movies of the decade from their time didn't even get enough hype before their releases.

When we think of movie hits, we often reference the fan-favorite MCU titles or something from the Fast and the Furious franchise. However, there are some sleeper hit movies that no one ever expected to be where it is. Not all Hollywood hits come from big studios and boast of a well-known cast. Sometimes, all it takes is a remarkable plot or something that gets the attention of audiences, whatever that may be. In this list, we have some of the most unexpected movie releases that made it big in the box office.
