Anyone who has ever owned a PlayStation game console knew what and played Resident Evil at some point. It is arguably the longest-running horror media franchise in Japan and is one of the popular ones worldwide. It's actually called Biohazard in Japan and the franchise was created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara. It is wholly-owned by video game company Capcom. The franchise is known for its series of survival horror games but it also includes various live-action and animated films. These two are the most popular ones but there are also comic books, novels, audio drama, and even various merchandise being sold. The main story of the games revolves around a group of individuals who battle against the Umbrella Corporation. It's a pharmaceutical company that conducts genetic experiments that resulted in the creation of the T-virus. This is what mainly causes the outbreak of zombies and other horrific monsters onto the world.
The first-ever Resident Evil game was released back in 1996 and it was a critical and commercial success. It was credited with popularizing the survival horror game genre as well as zombies in pop culture in general. Resident Evil is Capcom's best-selling video game franchise ever, with over 95 million sold worldwide as of 2019. It is also the highest-grossing film series based on video games. The single-player campaign can be finished in roughly five to six hours IF you know what you're doing. Even if you play around with other characters in the game, that playtime will only increase to about double, which again, really isn't that long. What keeps players coming back for more is the Ranking System in place which rewards those who finish the game in the safest and in the least amount of time with powerful weapons that they can take to the game and get back at those monsters who gave them so much trouble the first couple of tries around. Oh, sweet vengeance!
Yeah, all the zombies and various monsters in the game will definitely give you a good scare. Any good horror game knows that the sound and musical score can be just as frightening as seeing the actual monsters themselves and the Resident Evil games feature some of the best sound design that you can find in any game. It chilling, atmospheric, and will creep on you when you least expect it.
There's no such thing as a perfect game, be it in the survival horror genre or otherwise, but the Resident Evil games come pretty close to a "complete" formula. That was so much the case that it inspired a lot of the games that came after it. Despite this, Capcom always tried to aim for a better, more polished experience all the time. The franchise isn't afraid of experimenting with other genres as well, to varying results. Just when players were getting knee-deep in the action-horror genre, Resident Evil 7 came and it saw the franchise's return to pure horror. Then, you have the REmake games, which is the franchise's return to form and the definitive way to experience the Resident Evil story.
You might be so used to survival horror games by this point but make no mistake, Resident Evil games will keep you on your toes for the majority of the time. There are some calm moments in these games but they are few and far between. It will keep you guessing when will a dog come bursting through a window or when will a zombie suddenly grab you from nowhere as you run across a narrow hallway. Honestly, these games feature some genuinely scary monster that would have you transported back to your child and scare the living crap out of you. Good stuff!
Each player will all have different ways of assessing and tackling a problem in the game, and Capcom knew this. Armed with full health packs and ammo, you could defeat any monster in the game, one-on-one, with relative ease. That is rarely the case with this game though. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong as you play and battle monsters in the game. Sudden attacks and interruptions from multiple zombies are common in the game, which renders some tactics completely useless. The game has an uncanny way of empowering you while at the same time, rending you completely helpless in a lot of situations.
