Any self-respecting anime fan will know who Studio Ghibli is and the significance they have. The studio represents one of the best examples of what the Japanese animation industry has to offer to the world. If you're a neophyte to the world of Studio Ghibli, read on to find out more about this legendary animation studio. Studio Ghibli was founded on the 15th of June, 1985 and is based in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan. The studio was founded by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata as well as producer Toshio Suzuki. The studio's first-ever feature film released under unique circumstances. Unique in a way that it came even before Studio Ghibli was actually founded. That film was the 1984's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki for animation studio Topcraft and was distributed by the Toei Company.
Studio Ghibli has a total of 21 feature films so far. Of these films, 6 are part of a special group as the 10 highest-grossing anime films ever made in Japan. The highest one being 2001's Spirited Away, grossing over $360 million worldwide. In August of 2014, Studio Ghibli temporarily halted production. This was following the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki, who was aged 74 at the time. In 2017, co-founder Toshio Suzuki announced that Miyazaki has come out of retirement to direct a new feature film titled, How Do You Live? All is well and as they should be in the land of Studio Ghibli. Despite their critical acclaim, some Studio Ghibli movies were less-received than others.
