BoJack Horseman is an adult animated "tragicomedy" web series created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg. It premiered exclusively on Netflix on August 22, 2014. A Christmas special came a few months later on December 19. The show stars Will Arnett as the titular character, BoJack Horseman. He is joined by Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, and Aaron Paul to round out the cast. The show was designed by Lisa Hanawalt, who was actually friends with creator, Bob-Waksberg, since high school. The two have worked together in the past on the webcomic, Tip Me Over, Pour Me Out. The series takes place in Hollywood, LA, an alternate world where humans and anthropomorphic animals co-exist.
BoJack Horseman is a washed-up star of a popular sitcom in the 90s called Horsin' Around. He plans his big comeback to relevance with an all-out autobiography. This is to be written by a ghostwriter named Diane Nguyen. This is all while contending with the demands of his agent, Princess Carolyn. Then, there are the antics of his misguided roommate, Todd Chavez as well as his friend and rival, Mr. Peanutbutter. The show has received consistently good reviews throughout all of its seasons so far. It's considered one of the best shows on Netflix as well as animated adult shows in general. In fact, one show it gets compared to a lot is the show, Rick and Morty. Both shows touch on some very mature themes that adult viewers can relate to. BoJack Horseman season 6 was confirmed to be the show's final outing and it will be aired in two parts. Adult-like cartoons have existed as early as the 1920s and 30s? Disney has built a reputation for providing kid-friendly shows for the longest time. Even Disney though has experimented and has dealt with mildly risky and adult themes. Some of them were in relation to alcohol and prohibition in the early days. It even touched on sexuality that attempted to make gags out of underpants of some of its female animal characters. A good example of this was Betty Boop, who was basically a cartoon sex symbol with her roles in the early 1930s.
As time progressed though, so did adult cartoons. Most modern animated adult cartoons deal more with stories that pertain to adult themes and situations. This started with arguably one of the most popular adult cartoon show in the 90s, The Simpsons. They've become everyone's favorite dysfunctional yet lovable cartoon family. Today, we have shows like Rick and Morty that has gained critical acclaim from both critics and fans alike. Cartoons are no longer just for kids and younger audiences anymore. These shows have paved the way for some really amazing adult programming that mature audiences can enjoy and relate to. Adult cartoons are here to stay and we can't wait what else they have in store for us in the future.
