Carole & Tuesday is a 24-episode anime TV series that was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. It was produced by studio Bones to commemorate its 20th anniversary as well as record label FlyingDog's 10th. A manga adaptation by Morito Yamataka began serialization in the seinen manga magazine, Young Ace, in May 2019. An English release of the manga by Yen Press is slated to be released in 2020. An English dubbed version of the show also premiered on Netflix on August 30, 2019. The story is set in the future where people are living on a partially terraformed Mars. Tuesday Simmons is the daughter of a politician who decides to run away to Alba City to escape the affluent lifestyle that she grew up with.
Packing nothing but a suitcase and her Gibson acoustic guitar, she goes out to the world to pursue her dreams of becoming a musician. As if by fate, she crosses path with Carole Stanley the first day she arrives in the city. She too is an aspiring musician who plays the piano. The two decide to team up and form a duo under the name Carole & Tuesday. That's quite a premise, don't you think? A female music duo from Mars. It managed to build a world that is totally believable, all presented in a show that is both compelling and heartfelt at the same time. In short, you should definitely check this show out. The first song that was designed for anime was created in 1963? The anime show in question? Osamu Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atom, a little show you may know as Astro Boy. It was not uncommon for children's choir or its own voice actors to sing anime openings and endings. It was not until the 70s that singers specializing in anime songs appeared. Shows like Judo Boy, Captain Harlock, and Mazinger Z all came with anime songs specially made for them. Unfortunately, this trend did not last long though with the anime City Hunter in 1987. Anime shows have relegated back to using unrelated songs for its opening and ending themes. This has been the case to this day.
Music and anime are so intertwined that something was bound to come out of this and so it did. Music-themed anime shows became a thing and they were really good. Where to even begin? You have Nodame Cantabile and Your Lie in April for classical music fans. You have Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad K-On! for rock fans. You even have Love Live! and The Idol Master for those pop group fans. There's just so much quality music anime and there are no signs of that stopping anytime soon. One of the most recent entry is a show called Carole & Tuesday. This show has been widely praised by fans and critics alike. It's a great time to be a musician and an anime fan.
