DID YOU KNOW?
Dead Kids (2019), director Mikhail Red's latest masterpiece, is the first-ever Filipino movie to be considered as a Netflix Original. Yet, that is not the most surprising fact about the thriller movie! Did you know that Dead Kids is based on a true-crime story in the Philippines? Yes, you read that right! Since Mikhail Red is known to be a critically-acclaimed independent film director, he made sure to give an audacious take on a true-to-life story of a kidnapping incident in the Philippines in 2018.
Status Mag Online confirms that Dead Kids is indeed based on a true story. According to an article published for Status, the kidnapping incident in 2018 involved a 19-year-old student from Colegio de San Juan de Letran, a Catholic academic institution in Manila, Philippines. And just like the film's premise, the student was abducted by his fellow students who demanded half a million dollars! Oh well, the kidnappers were then charged with a kidnap for ransom case. Ever since Dead Kids arrived on Netflix on December 1, 2019, it has been buoyed with positive feedback from netizens, especially on Twitter! Perhaps, it's because netizens have grown so woke and prefer films of substance and depth. If you were able to watch Birdshot, another Mikhail Red film, you would notice the parallelism in terms of social issues that are tackled in both films.
