Did you know that Madam C.J. Walker is the first self-made female millionaire in the United States of America? Her birth name was Sarah Breedlove. She was the youngest among her five other siblings. Her parents and five other siblings were among the millions of enslaved African Americans before the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. But since the Emancipation Proclamation was signed before Sarah was born in 1867, she was born free. Although she was born into freedom, it didn't mean her life would be easy. At age seven, she became an orphan. As a result, she started working as a domestic servant at a very young age. When she turned 14, she married Moses McWilliams in order to get away from her abusive brother-in-law. In 1885, she gave birth to a daughter whom she called A'Lelia McWilliams. Sadly, when Sarah was twenty, her husband died. Since their daughter was just two years old when she became a widow, Sarah was forced to work as a washerwoman. This was in order to support her daughter and herself. Despite her low income, she was still able to send her daughter to school.
Sarah’s name, Madam C.J. Walker, is based on the name of her third husband, Charles Joseph Walker. She started her small business by creating a hair grower product. Interestingly, her business became successful that she then had over 25,000 sales agents. She also got to live in Villa Lewaro, a 34-room mansion located in New York. Meanwhile, there are also other stories based on real-life which you can stream online while waiting for Self Made: Inspired by The Life of Madam C.J. Walker to be released on Netflix.
