Some of them may use magic, others their wits, but they’re all bad in their own way. No Disney film would be complete without a villain, and if it is a female villain we're talking about, things could really get wild for our heroes. In this list, we feature the baddest female Disney villains.
Maleficent is one of the more famous female Disney villains out there. She was first featured in the 1959 film 'Sleeping Beauty', and even grew in popularity when Angelina Jolie portrayed her in the 2014 remake. Her evil nature is so powerful that her curses can’t be broken by other magic users. If that isn't scary enough, she can also transform into a huge fire-breathing dragon. Maleficent is evil, but she also possesses grace, intelligence and a really wicked laugh.
Ursula first came out in Disney's 1989 film The Little Mermaid. This sea witch was vanquished by King Triton and forced to live in a sea cave, where she lures and manipulates merpeople including Ariel, the little mermaid herself. She is bad and does everything by the book, and then she makes sure things go the way she wants them to even if it means turning into a human for a while, which she did.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the baddest Disney villain of them all? Quite possibly, it would have to be Grimhilde, the original Evil Queen. With her ordering the murder of her own stepdaughter and eventually carrying the plan out herself, she is definitely made of evil. Transforming into an old woman all because her mirror says Snow White is fairer? This is proof of her vanity and cruelty that only a few can compare to.
Cruella De Vil is completely selfish, materialistic and just plain mean. As the main antagonist of the 1961 film 101 Dalmatians, she was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson and played by Glenn Close in the 1996 remake. She is bad for so many reasons but this insane fashionista, at the back of her head, plots to skin 99 Dalmatian puppies to make a fur coat.
Lady Tremaine, whom we all know as the Wicked Stepmother, is the villain of the 1950 film Cinderella and was portrayed by Cate Blanchett in the 2015 remake. She is known to be selfish and cruel with a single-minded fixation on marrying off her biological daughters to nobility. Yes, she doesn't need to get physical or use magic to be a villain, but she is still known for her evil treatment towards Cinderella.
Mother Gothel from 2010's Tangled will do anything to keep Rapunzel locked up in the tower. This alone makes her a bad villain. Gothel can keep all the power of her kidnapped prisoner’s golden hair to herself. Though she is intelligent, quite stylish and charming, she’s also extremely selfish and manipulative. So, mothers may not know best all the time after all.
We may not want to live under her rule, but we sure do enjoy watching this evil queen’s antics. The Queen of Hearts is the main antagonist of the 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland. She is one of the most overtly tyrannical Disney villains. Played by Helena Bonham Carter in 2010's remake, she has a certain charm to her evilness which makes her quite likable.
Yzma is the royal adviser of Emperor Kuzco in Disney's 2000 feature, 'The Emperor's New Groove'. She is also a mad potions master who tries to use her potions to get rid of her master and instate herself as empress. The movie's version saw Eartha Kitt, who voiced Yzma, receive three Annie Awards and two Emmys for this evil role. This villain's appearance may be strange but she is surely funny.
